Ingredients
  

  • 12 ounces penne pasta
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 5 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes or more to taste
  • 1 can 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese optional

Method
 

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Cook the penne according to package directions until al dente.
  3. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water and drain the pasta.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes.
  6. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  7. Stir in the crushed tomatoes.
  8. Add salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  9. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. Add a splash of reserved pasta water if the sauce becomes too thick.
  11. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet.
  12. Toss until the pasta is evenly coated.
  13. Stir in the parsley.
  14. Top with Parmesan cheese if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level.
  • Use high-quality canned tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • Do not burn the garlic.
  • Reserve pasta water before draining.
  • Fresh parsley brightens the sauce.
  • Parmesan is optional but adds richness.
